BSE to cost farmers another £21.5m

FARMERS are likely to bear the costs of BSE inspections in abattoirs and slaughterhouses because the Government is no longer prepared to pick up the bill.

Agriculture Minister Nick Brown said plants handling cattle and sheep would start paying for inspections by vets and meat hygiene officials from 29 March.

Abattoirs are expected to pass on the costs to farmers in a move set to net the Government £21.5 million in the first year of operation.
