Bulls share top billing at Carlisle
THERE were only four bulls on offer at the Border and Lakeland Holstein show and sale at Carlisle, but two shared top billing at 2800gns and 1000gns.
A stylish young bull from Willie Armours herd at Moffat, Dumfriesshire drew the highest bid and now starts work with buyers Messrs Roberts at Cockermouth.
Mr Armours Annandale Drum Major is by the home-bred sire Annandale Sharpo and out of an eighth lactation cow that gave over 10,100kg and peaked at 13,150 in her seventh note.
Collecting the male championship was Upsall Formidable, which looked a bargain buy at just 1000gns. Bred by the Dicksons at Upsall, but consigned by local dairy farmers Stephen and Anne Morley who run the Petteril herd, Formidable looked every inch his breeding. He comes from the same Canadian family that produced the leading Holstein sires Comestar Leader and Comestar Lee. He is by Jolt and out of young 11,700kg cow by Prelude. Buyers were R Hamilton and Sons, Strathaven, Lanarkshire.
There was a shortage of quality cattle in the female section but prices hit 920gns given by Hardgrave Farm, Dumfries for Errolston Universe Jinks, a calved heifer from B and V Davidson, Gretna.
The champion, a calved heifer by Dombinator from J J Bushbys Hilltop herd on the Cumbrian coast, sold for 900gns to fellow west Cumbrian dairy farmer J T Fawcett, Seascale.
