Burger King brings back British beef
Burger King UK has ended its ban on the use of British beef in its burgers. The decision is worth £10m a year to the beef industry.
Last week rival burger chain McDonalds started the ball rolling when it lifted its ban on British beef which is expected to boost the industry by at least £30m a year.
Burger King said it made the decision after discussion with the Ministry for Agriculuture, Fisheries and Food, and the Northern Ireland and UK Meat and Livestock Commission. It has set up a system with its
suppliers so it can trace the meat it uses. Burger Kings managing director David Williams said the decision was based on research that showed 73% of customers supported the return of British beef as long as
the beef was backed by a farm assurance scheme. It will be re-introduced
into Burger Kings 429 outlets over the next few weeks.
