TOP quality store North Country wedder lambs for spring finishing were about £1 dearer on the year at last weeks sale at Lairg, Sutherland.
But second- and third-draw lambs were not so well grown as in 1996 and dragged the overall wedder average down by 27p on the year to £41.67.
Buyers were even more selective among ewe lambs where there was a top price of £86 and an average of £44.74.
At the other end of the country in Wiltshire, Wilton Sheep Fair last Thursday saw a strong trade for ewe lambs, particularly Suffolk cross Scotch halfbreds, which sold to £67.50.
