Buying and selling is the years Frater theme

Chore or challenge, perceive it as you will, buying and selling is a major part of everyday life whether carried out for personal or business purposes.

Shopping, whatever side of the counter you are on, provides contact with other people that can be a joy or a trial or something in between. Mail order is another dimension while major deals – farm and home among them – can be life changing.

There is no doubt about it, buying and selling is a matter on which everyone has something to say and, with that in mind, we have chosen Point of Sale as the theme for the 1998 Veronica Frater Memorial Contest.

As many Farmlife readers will recall, Veronica was the diarist who shared with Farmlife readers the ups-and-downs of farm and family life for more than six years until her death from cancer in spring 1993.

We have run writing contests in her memory each autumn and as a result seen something of the lives of other farm families for the prize we offer includes a six month contract to write a monthly diary column* for Farmlife. The winner will also receive a cheque for £200. Cheques for £50 will go to the authors of each of the runner up entries that we publish. We hope there will be many.

The theme offers plenty of scope but entries must be based on real life. We do not want fiction and neither are we looking for verse. The only other stipulations are that entries must not exceed 600 words and each must have a Veronica Frater Memorial Contest coupon attached.

Entries should be typed or clearly written and addressed to Veronica Frater Memorial Contest, farmers weekly, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5AS. The closing date for entries is Fri, Oct 30, 1998. No entries will be returned.

*They all ran after the farmers wife and Summer Holidaze are the two autobiographical books by Veronica Frater roughly covering the period of her Farmlife diaries. Written in the same entertaining style as the diaries, they describe the ups and downs of life on a mixed farm on the Northumbrian coast, with a family of seven children, plus bed-and-breakfast guests and a holiday cottage enterprise.

The books are published by Farming Press and available from farmers weekly Offers, PO Box 261, Slough, Berks SL2 3RU. They all ran after the farmers wife (ref 312) costs £4.95 and Summer Holidaze (ref 544) is on offer at £2.50. Add £1.95 an order p&p.
