Call for organic-GM compromise
THE House of Lords agriculture sub-committee has called for organic farmers and producers who favour genetically-modified (GM) crops to settle their differences.
It wants the two sides to agree on the role of the UK register of organic food standards and the proposed farming and environment biotechnology commission.
The committee also said it did not think the government should introduce a new scheme which would provide subsidies exclusively for organic farmers.
It suggested there should be some streamlining of the various agri-environment schemes to ensure a fairer system of grant payments.
