Canada to contract-out grain shipping

CANADA has announced plans to partially commercialise its grain transport system.

The Canadian government says this will strengthen its ability to deliver grain to the international market, reports the Financial Times.

This move will reduce some of the powers of the Canadian Wheat Board, which is responsible for overseas sales of Canadian grain.

Under the new measures the board will retain marketing and sales functions, but will have to contract out logistical services for shipments of at least half the grain handled in 2003.

Canada is the worlds second largest grain exporter.
