Caribbean banana growers face devastation
A DELEGATION from St Vincent, in the Caribbean, is in Brussels this week in a last-ditch attempt to save its banana industry from collapse.
The problem stems from the World Trade Organisation ruling last year that the preferential trading arrangements that have supported Caribbean banana exports to Europe for decades were illegal.
The delegation claims farmers are going out of business and many are killing themselves. The European Union will attempt to find a compromise arrangement.
