Carlisle A-As hit 3000gns double at Society event

By Jeremy Hunt

COMMERCIAL and pedigree buyers competed for bulls at the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Societys spring fixture at Carlisle, where bidding twice reached 3000gns.

First at this level was Tegsnose Elvis, a May 1998-bred son of Lord Horatio P11 of Blelack from Nigel Hammills herd at Macclesfield, Cheshire. A big-ended bull out of a Scotch Cap cow, he was selected by MLC to represent the breed at Beef 1999. He has a Beef Value of 25, and was bought by I J Addison, Castle Douglas.

G Forbes-Leith came down from Aberdeenshire with Fyvie Cosmo and shared the top price, selling to J &#42 and E W Maxwell, Thornhill, Dumfries. Cosmo has a Beef Value of 26 and is by Powerful R3 of Peebles.

Fellow Aberdonian Neil Massie had two bulls at 2800gns. His Black Batman X44 of Blelack, which stood champion, is by Royal Added Value and out of Blackbird T22 of Blelack. This combination has previously produced bulls at 6000gns and 5500gns. Black Batman heads for Canonby, Dumfries with L and N Graham.

Another Added Value son from the Massie familys consignment was Prince Charm X59 of Blelack. He had a Beef Value of 25, and was bought by A and M Wilson, Stranraer, at 2800gns.

Mr Hammill was back among the leading bids with a 2500gns call for Tegsnose Penwac. This son of Wedderlie Kathak had a 400-day weight of 546kg and joins Broadfield Farms in Glos.

The first lot through the ring failed to sell under the hammer, but a private deal afterwards saw Cumbria breeder Carolyn Fletcher receive 2400gns for Gonzalo of Barwise, a son of Janitor Eric of Cubbyhill. Buyers were T A Thompson and Sons, Hawick.

Other leading bids included 2100gns for Northants vendors Neil and Sami Browns Ebenezer of Southview. This Heathlands Puzzle son is out of a Cambusbarron cow and was claimed by R S Wood, Sanquhar, Dumfries.

It was an unhaltered entry from the draft consignment from Mrs P A Hollidays herd at Harrogate, North Yorks that led the females. Dacre Princess BP U6 was by Burthlene Patriot and was sold suckling her third calf, a heifer by Cardona Emperor, to the Watership Down Partnership from Hants, at 1600gns.

The champion, Kelso breeders J and W Arnotts Gertai of Haymount, a Samurai daughter, was sold with a bull calf at foot by Cardona Eagle, and made 1500gns to C Page from East Yorks.

Averages 41 bulls £1683, 20 cows £995, nine served heifers £1029 and 10 unserved heifers £852. (Harrison and Hetherington.) &#42
