PRIME cattle were a flying trade at Harrison & Hetheringtons Christmas primestock show and sale held on Dec 3.

The Carlisle-based auctioneer decided to hold the video show and sale to replace its traditional Christmas cattle primestock event, which had to be cancelled because of foot-and-mouth.

Before the sale, the judge – Jim Mulholland a butcher from Great Orton, in Cumbria – viewed primestock on entrants farm to select his winner.

Out of the 80 entries, Mr Mulholland voted for a 565kg steer from John Smith-Jackson of High Town, Melkridge, Haltwhistle. The bullock was bred from his pedigree Limousin stock bull Shire Apollo, and sold to Nick Bellas, a butcher from Birchwood, Shap, for the top price of 195p/kg.

Other leading prices included a Belgian Blue cross heifer from Keith Harryman of Keskadale, Newlands, Keswick, which sold for 172p/kg. &#42
