Carrot aphid spread

CARROT willow aphid migration into this seasons carrot crops is increasing and likely to continue for several weeks, warns independent Lancs-based vegetable advisor Fred Tyler. Control is now a priority.

The aphids not only cause significant crop loss through direct feeding, but also transmit virus diseases to carrots. As reported in last weeks farmers weekly, in recent years the most damaging virus has been parsnip yellow fleck virus. Some scientists now believe this may be the primary cause of crown rot, not violet root rot as incorrectly stated in last weeks issue.
