Chancellor to change climate tax levy?

THE government is to change the tax that the National Farmers Union says would put farmers out of business.

Chancellor Gordon Brown is expected to announce in his pre-Budget report tomorrow that the proposed climate change levy will be modified to reduce its impact on business competitiveness.

The move comes after pressure from a number of industries.

Negotiations are still taking place with high energy users on the size of proposed discounts on the levy in return for binding undertakings to cut pollution emissions.

Exact details of how the levy will work could be held back until the Budget in March.
