Charolais and B&W judged top interbreeds

WITH an attendance of 175,000 – about the same as last year – and absence, for the most part, of rain, this years Royal Show must have pleased the organisers.
Individual interbreeds were judged on Thursday, with Charolais and Holstein Friesian cows taking the ribbons in beef and dairy interbreeds, a Suffolk taking the sheep title and a Landrace winning the pig interbreed.
Mortimers Farms Mowbray-park Gigi, the seven-year-old Charolais cow, continued her run of success. From Fair Oak, Eastleigh, Hants, the Royal Highland show champion took the Royals beef interbreed title, as well as being one of the pair to take the Burke pairs trophy. Reserve interbreed title went to Perthshire breeder Robert Galloway for his Aberdeen Angus heifer Cardona Fiona.
In the dairy ring, Strutt and Parker (Farms) Cadilac Lindy Sasha, an imported four-year-old cow in milk, took the interbreed title, and again was part of the black-and-white team which took the Burke dairy pairs award. Abbotsley Boys Opal, a fourth calver from Cheshire-based Jersey breeder Roy Bailey took reserve.
Sandy Frasers Santon flock, from Appleby, Scunthorpe, took the honours in the sheep interbreed with a Suffolk shearling ewe, with J A Darke from Kingsbridge, Devon, in reserve spot with a Devon and Cornwall Longwool yearling ewe.
In the pig lines, the interbreed title went to local breeder Christine Vaughan, from Upton, Nuneaton, with her Landrace sow Vinery Lioness 3978. Dorset breeder B J Card took reserve with the Large Black sow Westham Maid 77.
