Charolais bull average rises by £410 on year
CHAROLAIS breeders were in confident mood at the breed societys Welshpool fixture where the bull average of £1712 was lifted £410 on the year.
But if demand for females is an indicator of a breeds future prosperity the Welshpool ringside also created a rosy picture when the sales top price of 3100gns for a cow and calf.
The outfit was part of a herd reduction consignment of 20 head from EH Pennie and Son, Llandyssil, Montgomery, Powys. Their Sarkley Medwenna (Beef Value 27) is a 1996-bred cow by Bassingbourn Hilton and was sold with a well grown bull calf by popular sire Allanfauld Vagabond. Buyer was RN Waters, Craven Arms, Shropshire.
Two other Sarkley cows suckling calves benefited from the buoyant trade. Both were taken by JC Bostock, Kenilworth, Warks. He gave 2400gns for Sarkley Miranda suckling a Vagabond bull calf and 2000gns for a young Friarton Ensign daughter with a heifer calf at foot by Moyness Lincoln.
Progeny of the late Maerdy Grimaldi, a bull imported from France by Esmor Evans, continues to find favour with breeders and it was another son that topped the sale list at Welshpool.
Maerdy Ossie started the day by collecting the reserve championship and went on to make 2900gns to TR Jones, Llanfyllin, Powys.
Killadeas Jack, sire of the 25,000gns Perth topper, produced another good sort in Seawell Orim which notched up the sale championship for owner Peter Donger of Towcester, Northants. Orim stays in mid-Wales with TL Morris, Knighton.
Mr Bostock recouped some of the investment in his two Sarkley females from a good trade for bulls from his Roundshill herd which reached 2300gns. (Welshpool Livestock Sales) *
