CHECKING store cattle are farm assured will be one of the biggest challenges facing finishers, according to Richard Phelps, managing director of Southern Counties Fresh Foods.

Although 75% of finished cattle are farm assured – 1.1m – only 300,000 store cattle are currently assured, he said. "This is a joke. Farm assurance of store cattle will only happen if those purchasing insist upon it. Customers will increasingly demand farm assurance from birth," he said. &#42
