Chinese farmers clash with police

FREQUENT clashes are taking place between farmers and police in the Three Gorges Dam area of the Yangtze river, reports The Times.

Peasants claim that officials have embezzled central funds destined for them.

The issue has just been taken up by the Chinese prime minister Zhu Rongji.
