Chirac says ‘non’ to Santer price-cutting reforms

PROPOSALS for price-cutting reform of farm policies across the European Union are currently unacceptable, French president Jacques Chirac said in Paris yesterday.

He vowed to make his objections clear in future talks with European leaders. He claimed the proposals were particularly bad for the beef, milk and oilseed farm sectors and ignored the “essential” export function of European farmers.

European Commission president Jacques Santer put forward the proposals last month.
