Chopper boss buys top stock

HELICOPTER magnate and Holstein breeder Alan Bristows eye on the sales calendar made sure he was at last weeks Nortonhill dispersal, Devon to acquire some choice breeding stock.

His mission was to acquire a combination of the top USA-bred sire Lutz Meadows E Mandel and the notable brood cow Snow-N Denises Dellia. And he paid 3250gns for the privilege of adding the served heifer Northonhill Dellia to his Alanta herd at Cranleigh, Surrey.

By Mandel and out of Kamp-Hollow Decorate – a granddaughter of the famous Dellia – she was in-calf to Carol Prelude Mtoto and was part of the dispersal of Roger and David Wilcoxs herd at Tiverton.

Partnering her on the homeward journey was the ten-month-old heifer Nortonhill Ebony, a Maughlin Storm daughter out of the 12,000kg Gillette Aerostar Excelence, herself a granddaughter of the American cow Rocky-Vu Rotate Extasy Ebony. She made 3000gns.

Best price for milking cattle was 1850gns given by I W and M W Russell, Beaworthy, Devon for the calved heifer Moorshard Mascot Rosa 35th for their Perrins herd.

The Portledge Estate at Bideford had already purchased the senior portion of the Nortonhill herd in a private deal early last year. They came back to add Nortonhill Integrity Jess, a cow due shortly with her third to Parker Aero Wade, taken at 1750gns.

Nortonhill Boulet Debbie 2nd, a winner of the in-calf heifer class at the mid-Devon Show, was sold about to calve to Maizefield Bellwood and realised 1600gns to D and P Mead and Co for their Lynchmead herd, Weston-Super-Mare.

Penzance dairy farmer T J Dauncey gave 1250gns for the calved heifer Olympian Luke Ivy while calves sold well to 920gns. That was given by Mr Bristow for Nortonhill Rudolph Rosina.
