THE Church of England has denied a front-page report in todays Independent that it has banned trials of genetically modified crops from Church land.
A statement from the Church Commissioners said they were still considering the ethical issues they felt must be considered before deciding whether to ban GM trials.
But the Commissioners confirmed they had been asked by Ministry of Agriculture researchers if they could lease Church land for use in the governments GM trials.
The Church of England owns more than 123,000 acres of agricultural land in Britain, said to be worth about £237 million.
