CIWF veal case heard in court
A LEGAL challenge by animal welfare groups, which could result in a permanent ban on the export of British calves to Continental veal crates, was heard in the European Court of Justice on Tuesday.
The case, brought by Compassion in World Farming and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, was launched before the beef ban was imposed last year, and was referred to Europe by the British courts.
The groups challenged the former governments insistence that, under European laws, the UK was not legally entitled to ban the export of calves to Continental veal crates.
The case was the first ever brought by animal welfare societies to reach the European Court. The judgement is not expected for at least two months. *
