DEATHS from the human form of BSE are rising by more than 30% a year, according to a report published by the medical journal The Lancet.
The predicted epidemic of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) has not, as yet, hit the UK, but it may still be too soon to relax, says the article.
To date, 75 patients have been identified by the National CJD Surveillance Unit, 69 of whom have died, it adds.
The number of cases has increased every year from 1994. Investigators say the increase is a matter for concern, even though the number of cases remains low.
