Class conquers as Sterndales hit high notes

A SIZZLING trade for gilt-edged black-and-white genetics took bidding to 15,000gns at a reduction from the Sterndale herd.

The event for Bill Nadin and daughters Susan and Jane attracted a capacity crowd to Buxton, Derbys.

A string of shrewd purchases and some wise breeding decisions have rapidly shot the herd to prominence. And this sale comprised the entire milking portion, four outstanding maiden heifers and 17 young bulls and bull calves. The 110 females averaged just under £2000.

World class cow families – including Barb, Olga Bell, Lulu, Roxette, Fawn, Miss America, Monogram, Meg and Papoose – were on offer combined with impressive production figures up to 15,000kg. There was type in plenty with nine classified Excellent and 39 Very Good.

Taking the top price was Gerdoth Benefit Sarah, a second calver by Maloya Benefit and out of Gerdoth Inspiration Sarah. She was second in the junior cow in-milk class at this years National Holstein Show and had scored maximum points for her age with both the HFS and the BHS. She was best udder in show at the NHS. Buyer was Paul Ratcliffe, Lancaster.

The other animal in the sale to score maximum points with both societies was Sterndale Astre Christa. A first calver, she is the 10th generation of VG/EX cows and stood third at this years NHS show. She is out of the Southwind-sired VT-Pond-View SW Christa and made 10,000gns to Tom Cowell, Kirkham, Lancs.

The Prelude granddaughter of Quietcove Valiant Fawn, Gillette Brilea Fanny, was bought for $36,000 at the Eastern Reflection sale in Canada in 1994. This first calver was sold carrying a Fatal embryo out of Sterndale Das Charity and realised 7000gns to Messrs Hughes and Son, Atherstone, Warwicks.

An undisclosed bidder gave 6200gns for Crasdale Prelude Papoose, a second calver and another 10th generation VG/EX entry. The second calver Millbrooke Raider Opal, a 14,000kg granddaughter of Lonsfarm Olga Bell, is due this month to Robthom Integrity. She made 6000gns to M Knutsford, Macclesfield, Cheshire.

Sterndale Astre Sexy Charity, a calved heifer out of a VT-Pond-View cow by Blackstar, sold to Fred Mawer and Sons, Grantham, Lincs at 6000gns. There were six other transactions between 3200gns and 4400gns.
