Coir’s new presence in the world market

COIR – the fibre made from coconut husks – is making a comeback in world markets, according to the Financial Times.

There is growing demand for the fibre in the USA and Europe. The product is made into rugs, carpets, mats and matting. Industry experts recognise it will require careful pricing if it is to compete against other natural fibres such as jute, sisal, sea grass, hemp and cotton.

India is the worlds largest producer and exporter of coir products. Its exports were up 6.5% to Rs2.27 billion ($53.4m) in the year ended 31 March, 1988.
