Contact OSR performs well
KEITH HARRIS, who farms at Silton in Somerset, has achieved record yields with Contact oilseed rape.
40ha (99 acres) of the crop yielded 4t/ha (1.6t/acre) with some spots yielding 5t/ha (2t/acre). The average for the farm is 3t/ha (1.25t/acre), which he describes as a low yielding area.
“Its the best weve ever had. We changed many things, including putting in wider row spacing and drilled it directly.”
Tomorrow, he expects to start combining peas and predicts wheat should come fit in one week.
“There are bold grains, but were not convinced its thick enough.”
The farm is based on a stone brash soil.
