Cophill heifers in high demand

STRONG demand for bulling and yearling heifers was a feature of the trade when father and son team of John and Ken Price dispersed their Cophill Holstein Friesian herd at Chepstow.

Served heifer Cophill Astre Chandra 2nd achieved the top price of 2000gns. By Starbuck and out of the 10,700kg Triple-Threat sired Rainbow Valley TT Chandra, she was bought by C A Clarke and Son, Nuneaton.

Cophill Microlite 2nd, a Donnandale Skychief daughter due soon with her third, realised 1750gns to W C and &#42 Williams, Anglesey, while a call of 1650gns from Lloyd Thomas, Carmarthen, secured him the milky Cophill Patricia 126th. Shed given 10,283kg in 289 days with her fourth and was due in June to La Poe Shark.

The Canadian imported third calver Orrlea Astre Henny, out of Keg Lane SC Henny, made 1500gns to local dairy farmer R Hinton. She had been AId to Formation.

Auctioneer Gwilym Richards said good quality cows and fresh calvers were still in demand but late lactation cattle were hard to cash.

"There has been a big change in attitude in recent weeks. The lower milk price has made a lot more farmers consider quitting ,but the inevitable rationalisation of the milk sector will see larger herds expanding and thats whats holding up the current trade."
