Council supports beef ban with French market

NORFOLK farmers are accusing a city council of supporting an illegal ban on British beef by staging a four-day French market, during the Easter weekend.

The county NFU wants Norwich City Council to say "non" and call off the event.

Tony Williams, county NFU chairman, said in a letter to the council: "My members are extremely angry that French markets are being promoted in the current climate.

"They have done everything thats been asked to ensure British beef meets the worlds toughest safety standards yet the French government continues to fly in the face of public and legal opinion," he said.

But Nick Williams, leader of the city council, said themarket would not be cancelled. "While we would not condone the French governments action, nothing is to be gained byretaliating against the French market traders." &#42
