Country folk? Don’t you believe it
NEARLY half of modern villagers were born in towns and cities, according to a survey carried out for Country Illustrated.
Results thrown up by the survey include:
- Some 53% believed that a farming revival could secure their villages future;
- 81% welcomed newcomers;
- Many were involved in field sports – 54% “involved in hunting”, 49% shooting and 37% fishing; and
- Some 78% considered foxhunting beneficial for the countryside.
One curious finding was that most villagers believed their neighbours had little understanding and consideration for farmers problems.
