Crackdown on livestock transport
By FWi staff
RULES governing livestock transport within Europe are to be tightened next spring, following the adoption of a damning report by the European Commission.
According to the document, there are major shortcomings in the enforcement of animal transport laws by national governments.
European consumer affairs commissioner David Byrne said he would not tolerate these shortcomings and relevant legislation would be made in the spring.
Brussels has asked for scientific advice on animal transport and envisages amending rules concerning unloading, resting, watering and feeding animals.
