Child axe sale sparks Royal Welsh investigation

An investigation has been launched after an axe, a knife and alcohol were sold to children at this year’s Royal Welsh show.

Trading Standards officials are investigating after Powys County Council sent test purchasers to the show to buy age-restricted products.

John Evans, Powys County Council spokesman, said an axe and a knife were sold by two traders to people under the age of 18 at the three-day show in Builth Wells last month.

A 16-year-old volunteer was also sold alcohol by one trader.

“These will be investigated by Trading Standards, who will take the appropriate action once the investigations have been completed,” Mr Evans told the Shropshire Star.

Police said crime at this year’s show was down by 58% on last year.

Just five arrests were made, while there were no cases of violent crime, compared with 11 reported cases in 2009.
