Farmers warned as Toyota Hilux thefts rise

Toyota Hilux drivers are being urged to ramp up security after new data revealed the pickup is now the most stolen newer vehicle in the UK.
Thefts of Hilux models less than three years old rose by a staggering 548.9% year-on-year, analysis by loss adjuster QuestGates has found.
The model topped the list for vehicles less than three years old most targeted by criminals in the UK in 2024 – a stark warning for farmers and rural dwellers, who rely heavily on the Hilux for work.

While overall vehicle thefts dropped by 4.5% last year, thefts of newer models (less than three years old) rose by 6.6%, showing a growing trend of organised gangs targeting high-value, technologically advanced vehicles.
“The increased targeting of the Toyota Hilux reflects changing criminal behaviour and the perceived value of and demand for specific models,” said Philip Swift, motor technical director at QuestGates.
“We advise affected owners to take immediate steps to secure their vehicles.”
In contrast, thefts of newer Land Rover models – including the Range Rover Evoque – have plummeted, thanks to major security improvements by the manufacturer.
North Yorkshire Police issued a warning earlier this year after a series of Hilux thefts in rural communities, with Sgt David Lund urging owners to invest in crime prevention and always remain vigilant.
Pickup thefts ‘on the rise’
Kirsty Hyslop, vehicle crime specialist at NFU Mutual, said: “Pickups like the Hilux are essential to farming operations, but their popularity makes them a prime target. We’ve seen both the number and cost of pickup truck thefts rise in 2025.”
She added: “Prevention remains key. We recommend combining several security measures – physical, electronic, and procedural – to reduce risk.”
NFU Mutual is working with the National Rural Crime Unit to trace and recover stolen vehicles, but warns that proactive steps are essential to deter thieves.
The rural insurer has also been increases in thefts of other types of pickups, such as Ford Rangers.
