TOP performing feed pea variety Arrow has surprised breeder Nickerson, leaving the company with no seed for commercial sale this spring.

First year results of recommended list trials were only average so multiplication stocks were limited, explains technical manager Steve Palmer. But two years of better performances prompted NIAB to provisionally recommend it (Arable Dec 31) with a yield of 106.

That is one point ahead of provisionally recommended variety Croma and 4% above top fully recommended varieties Eiffel and Baccara.

"We are getting enquiries, but the seed is not there," says Mr Palmer. Growers will be able to have a look at the variety in demonstrations at Cereals 2000 and other events.
