Cyanide threat to Balkan farms

FEARS are growing that a leak of cyanide into a river feeding the Danube may cause devastation to thousands of square miles of farmland in the Balkans.

Already, fish stocks and drinking water are threatened. The cyanide has killed tonnes of fish in Romania, Hungary and Serbia.

The spillage is from a gold mine in Romania, where cyanide is used to extract gold from ores.
