Development grant for Welsh abattoir

By FWi staff

WELSH abattoir Hamer International Ltd has been given an 88,000 grant to improve its beef line.

The Powys-based abattoir takes cattle from the 93 members of the Safeway Welsh Beef Group and from organic producers who supply the Waitrose chain.

The Welsh Development Agency grant will go towards the cost of expanding the beef facilities, which the firm says is necessary to meet increasing demand from supermarket customers.

“This project is of major importance to the local workforce and farming community,” says Wynfford James, head of the WDAs food directorate.

“Hamer International is a big player in the Welsh meat industry and this development will ensure customers get a consistent supply of quality Welsh beef.”
