Disappointed with new rape varieties
LINCOLNSHIRE farmer James Lunn started combining oilseed rape on Monday and has seen a varied crop.
He has cut 25ha(60 acres) of Inca and 11ha (28acres) of Gemini, at his fenland farm at Frithville near Boston.
8ha (20 acres) of industrial Inca yielded at 2.5t/ha (1t/acre), while the other 17ha (40 acres) of Inca and Gemini yielded at 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre).
“Overall Im disappointed as we normally expect 1.75-2t/acre. The industrial Inca crop suffered especially bad flooding.”
He also noted, “on some of the Gemini plants there is only 3-4 seeds per pod, although they were large seeds.”
He says he thinks that the new varieties are not performing that well.
