Disease in wheat and spring barley

QUALITY and yields in the winter wheat and spring barley crops are continuing to be disappointing. Cannington Grains Ted Bird says 50-55% of the winter wheat area has been combined across Somerset, Devon and Cornwall and 20% of the spring barley area.

He says there is disease emerging in both crops. Fusariun is emerging in spring barley. “Fusariun is becoming a big problem. In a batch of 80 acres (32ha) of Optic, every sample has got the disease. Its very easy to spot.” Optic and Chariot are also recording high nitrogen ranging 1.8-1.9%.

He notes the variance in harvest, “Due to the variance of drilling dates harvest has been more difficult for farmers, going back and forth between wheat and spring barley.”
