Dropping spray tax prompts row

THE governments decision to abandon plans for a tax on pesticides has prompted a row in parliament.

MPs and environmental groups have accused ministers of a “cynical PR exercise” while the government is promoting countryside policy.

John Horam, Conservative chairman of the Commons environment audit select committee, has written to the Treasury to criticise the timing of the decision.

The government made the announcement before a report was about to be published on the issue.
