Dual-purpose edge

THE cattle breeding industry should breed dual purpose animals for low cost milk production and higher value calves.

Rodger Lindsay of Lindsays AI company believes that dual purpose cattle would suit dairy farmers better than specialist high cost production cows in the current financial climate. "Index breeding has become a burden to dairy farmers as they move away from high-cost production."

In addition to producing milk efficiently, dual purpose cattle would allow milk producers to exploit the shortage of beef finishers and suckler cows, he says. &#42
