EC backs move to end banana war

THE European Commission is expected to back proposals aimed at ending a transatlantic dispute over trade in bananas.

It is likely to back reforms to give Latin American countries initial access to a quota now restricted to African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) nations, and will eventually end all quotas.

The European Unions executive is expected to conclude that the long-term solution to complaints about its banana-importing regime is a tariff-only system, but that an interim regime is needed to allow ACP countries time to adjust.
