EC calls for labelling of GM food
The European Commission is to call for the labelling of all seeds,
animal feeds and consumer foods.
The move comes amid mounting concern over food technology following
the crisis over BSE and disputes over products such as
Novartis gene modified maize. The maize was banned by Austria, Italy
and Luxembourg because of safety concerns.
The EC wants labelling to say one of three things: whether they do or
do not contain some gene-modified organisms, or may contain them.
Farmers would not be forced to segregate crops, though some might choose
to.
