Economy hits Croatian agribusiness

THE Financial Times profiles Agrokor, a Croatian agribusiness which has ambitions to become the countrys first $1 billion private company.

The company started as a flower trader but is now a mini-conglomerate involved in everything from food processing to retailing.

The current state of the economy has left the company in some difficulty. High import tariffs protect part of the industry from foreign competition, but much of it suffers from an inability to pay bills. As much as 40% of its business with suppliers and customers is now done on a barter business.
