Egypt lifts 10-year poultry ban

EGYPTS 10-year poultry import ban has come to an end, giving foreign suppliers access to the market which is worth up to $2.4 million (£1.51m) annually.

The ban was only lifted after the imposition of an 80% tariff to protect local industry. This applies on the minimum price of $1.600/t of imported poultry. The tariff will be reduced by 2.4% a year. Importers will have to pay about $1,200/t a year in duties.

Imported poultry will retail for about E£9.50, compared with local products for between E£6 and E£2.30.
