EU Commission fails to overturn GM maize ban

By FWi staff

THE European Commission has failed to overturn a unilateral ban imposed by two EU countries on the use of genetically-engineered maize manufactured by Novartis.

The EU Regulatory Committee was yesterday unable reach a majority decision that Austria and Luxembourg had acted illegally when they banned the Novartis maize from their countries early last year.

The Commission will now submit two draft proposals, to get the ban lifted, to the Council of Ministers for a decision. The Council must decide whether or not to overturn the ban within three months of receiving the documents.
