EU harvest set at 197m tonnes HGCA

  • Strategie Grains has estimated the EU total harvest for 1999/00 at 197 million tonnes, with EU soft wheat constituting 88.7m tonnes.
  • Gersons, the malting barley trader, has reported that the malting barley market picked up last week due to heavy buying for export business and also a little demand from the domestic trade. China and Korea have been actively purchasing barley from EU countries with France and Denmark seeing some trade. Meanwhile strong interest from Eastern Europe remains.
  • Germany has seen increased ex-farm selling with bread-making grain, malting barley, and oat prices all firm. There have been reports of a lively export market, with market prices expected to rise as a result of support from French prices.
  • German wheat export sales look likely to improve, with interest picking up in North Africa. Domestic sales have, however, remained limited.
  • French farmers are expected to sow a greater amount of winter grain in the 1999/00 planting season with 6.58m ha being sown, according to the French Confederation of Seed. An expected 2.5m ha of spring grain sowings have also been predicted.
  • Spanish maize prices came under pressure, with harvesting in the southern regions complete and the north picking up after initial delays. The market is awaiting a decision in modifying the reduced levy import arrangements, which will cover 400,000 tonnes of maize.
