EU hoards food as Ethiopia starves

THE European Union is hoarding 500,000 tonnes of rice while Ethiopia faces starvation, reports TheExpress.

The EU is spending an estimated 1 million a month storing rice from Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece, claims the Italian Rice Association.

The EU said it paid 31m for the rice under the Common Agricultural Policy intervention system, with storage costing 2.5m a year.

Up to 16m people in the Horn of Africa face starvation after several years of drought and war.
