EU postpones ban on US beef

by FWi staff

A EUROPEAN Union ban on imports of beef from the USA, due
to come into force today (Tuesday), has been postponed by six months.

European officials threatened the ban earlier this year unless the
USA agreed to guarantee that the beef it sent to Europe was produced
without added hormones.

The threat came after some beef imports from the USA in April were
found to contain traces of hormones although they were supposed to be
hormone-free.

Brussels is expected to confirm today that the ban on US beef has
been postponed until 15 December to allow time for a negotiated
settlement.
