EU prices firm on export demand HGCA

  • The 21,500 tonnes awarded on 14 October at the EUs export tender largely set the tone for the week.
  • EU prices for wheat and barley have remained steady this week, with little change being seen.
  • EU malting barley received support this week from high levels of malt and malting barley exports.
  • EU maize prices were also firm, due to anticipated demand from the Mediterranean countries.
  • France was reported to have seen fairly strong levels of international demand for wheat. Most of the interest has come from North Africa, India, Bangladesh, and Iran, with exports reaching 500,000tonnes to these destinations.
  • Traders in Spain reported swift demand for feed wheat over the last week as they predict a shortage of cheap maize until the EU opens a tranche of reduced levy non-EU maize for Spain.
  • Dry weather conditions has favoured Germanys maize harvest with prices starting above last years levels. Also, winter grain sowings are expected to be close to 1998s.
