EURO-BRIEFS

uDENMARK has moved swiftly to introduce the destruction of all specified risk material from cattle after the discovery of the countrys first native case of BSE last week. Although criticised by farmer groups as a "knee jerk" reaction, the move by new agriculture minister, Ritt Bjerregaard, has been praised by EU food safety commissioner, David Byrne.

uBRUSSELS scientists have renewed their call for an EU-wide ban on specified risk materials in both the feed and human food chains as the best way of reducing the BSE risk for consumers. The scientific steering committee is assessing each member states risk status as the commission tries to push through legislation banning SRMs. &#42
