Europe opens up to UK meat exports

By Philip Clarke in Brussels

BEEF, sheepmeat, pigmeat and live pigs can now be exported from almost all of the UK, European vets have agreed.

Only Northumberland, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Durham, and some areas around these counties and still banned from exporting these products.

Live sheep and goat exports remain prohibited as does the export of live cattle due to BSE restrictions, said the European Union vets.

Two weeks ago, Brussels allowed the first exports of live pigs from counties that have not had a case of foot-and-mouth this year.

The latest decision to extend that area is another step towards normality after foot-and-mouth disease halted exports in February.
