European Parliament opens
with farming agenda
THE European Parliament opens its 1999 session today (Monday) with farming issues high on the agenda.
German foreign minister Joschka Fischer will present his countrys programme for its presidency of the European Union.
A priority on Germanys list will be winning agreement on the Agenda 2000 proposals before the deadline at the end of March.
Among other subjects for debate, MEPs will discuss Commission plans to cut guaranteed farm prices and proposed compensation for farmers.
