F&Mdowngrading

THE three remaining counties at "high risk" from foot-and-mouth disease were downgraded to "at-risk" areas on Tues (Dec 4). Local operations director Nasees Meah said he hoped North Yorkshire, County Durham and Cumbria would be declared F&M-free by the end of the year.

"There will be fewer restrictions on the movement of cattle and pigs in these three counties. We are cautiously optimistic that there is no disease left in this part of the country but farmers should still be on their guard." &#42

But almost half of culled farms in North Yorkshire still have to be completely cleansed and disinfected. Most are ahead of schedule and Mr Meah said he hoped the majority would be ready to restock in the New Year.
